The waitlist: the single most useful change
Waitlisting is the most practical improvement of recent years. When a train shows as sold out you can submit a waitlist order with payment held; if another passenger refunds or rebooks, the system issues you a ticket automatically and takes the money. If nothing frees up by the cut-off, you are refunded in full.
- You can waitlist several trains and several dates at once β the wider the net, the better the odds.
- Requests are filled in submission order, so there is no need to sit refreshing a page.
- Results arrive as app notifications and SMS, so keep notifications switched on.
- Even during holiday peaks it outperforms manual refreshing, and it is the only queueing mechanism the railway itself sanctions.
E-tickets changed how you enter the station
E-ticketing is now standard across the network and in almost all cases there is no paper ticket to collect. Whichever document you booked with is the one you carry, and you tap it at the gate.
If you need a receipt
Reimbursement receipts can be printed at a station kiosk or counter for up to 180 days after travel. A receipt can only be printed once, so keep it safe.
When you still need the staffed lane
Passengers travelling on a passport or a Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan residence permit normally use the staffed verification lane, as do children travelling without their own document and anyone whose card the gate cannot read.
Other features worth knowing
Quiet carriages
Selected Fuxing high-speed sets have a quiet carriage that you can choose when booking. It comes with expectations rather than rules: take calls in the vestibule, use headphones, and keep conversation low. Useful if you plan to sleep or work.
Multi-ride and season tickets
Some busy intercity corridors offer multi-ride and period passes that allow a number of journeys within a validity window at a lower unit cost than booking each leg separately β aimed at commuters and regular business travellers.
Connecting itineraries
Where there is no direct train, the search offers connections and flags whether the transfer time is realistic. At some stations you can change trains without leaving the paid area or repeating security.
Station services and catering
The app shows station departure boards, lets you request assistance for passengers who need it, and on many high-speed services allows meals to be ordered ahead and delivered to your seat.
