How early should I arrive?
Co-location: what makes West Kowloon different
Hong Kong West Kowloon is the southern terminus of the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link, and it operates a co-location arrangement: the Hong Kong and mainland port areas sit on different levels of the same building, so you clear both exit and entry formalities in one place without changing trains at the border.
- Once through, you are in the mainland port area, which operates under mainland law.
- You clear Hong Kong departure first, then mainland entry — and the reverse when travelling south.
- Because there are two border checks, the station takes noticeably longer than an ordinary high-speed station. This is the step travellers most often underestimate.

Book through 12306 or the official app exactly as for any other high-speed service, choosing Hong Kong West Kowloon as the destination. The document you book with must be valid for travel between the mainland and Hong Kong.
