Railway 12306 App

About Railway 12306 App

Railway 12306 App is the official mobile ticketing application launched by China State Railway Group, and the largest mobile ticketing platform in China. Since launching in 2013, it has been downloaded over 500 million times.

Through Railway 12306 App, you can complete the entire booking process: check nationwide train schedules and availability, purchase tickets and select seats online, process refunds and changes, use the waitlist feature for popular trains, manage frequent contacts, and view e-tickets and trip info.

The app uses real-name ticketing, supporting ID cards, passports, Hong Kong/Macau travel permits, and other document types. After booking, passengers can enter stations by scanning their ID or using the in-app QR code, without paper tickets.

What the official app can do

Railway 12306 is the official booking app of China State Railway Group, and it does far more than sell tickets. Knowing these modules saves a lot of queuing at the station.

  • Booking and waitlist β€” check availability, place orders, and join the waitlist when a train is sold out.
  • Changes and refunds β€” rebook once online before departure; refund fees increase the closer you get to departure.
  • E-tickets β€” for almost all services there is no paper ticket to collect; you enter using the ID document you booked with.
  • Trip management β€” upcoming orders, past journeys and reimbursement receipts in one place.
  • Timetables and live status β€” stopping patterns and real-time running information.
  • Station information β€” departure boards and, at larger stations, indoor navigation.
  • Onboard meals and connections β€” meal ordering on selected high-speed services and connecting-journey search.
  • Assisted travel β€” book station assistance for elderly, disabled or pregnant passengers.

Making sure you have the official app

App stores carry many similarly named third-party ticket-grabbing apps. They typically add a mark-up, request excessive permissions, and in some cases put your personal data at risk. Check the following:

  • The app is called Railway 12306 (铁路12306), not "12306 booking helper" or a similar third-party name.
  • The listed developer is the Chinese railway operator, not an individual or an unfamiliar company.
  • The safest route is the download page on the official site 12306.cn, which links to the genuine listings.
  • The official app never charges for "speed packs", "VIP grabbing" or similar upgrades.
  • Be wary of download links arriving by SMS or messaging apps β€” this is how fake pages usually spread.

Payment happens only through mainstream channels

In a genuine booking, payment hands over to Alipay, WeChat Pay or UnionPay, with the railway as the payee. If a page asks you to transfer to a personal account or to hand over an SMS verification code, stop immediately.

Troubleshooting

Cannot log in, or identity "pending verification"

A new account has to pass real-name verification. Holders of a Chinese resident ID card are usually verified automatically online. Passports and Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan permits often show as pending and may need to be verified at any railway station ticket counter, or by uploading documents as prompted in the app. Tickets cannot be bought until verification clears.

The order was cancelled because payment timed out

Orders hold a seat for a limited window, usually around ten minutes and sometimes less during holidays. If it expires the order is cancelled and the seat released. Link a payment method in advance so checkout is not the slow step.

The gate will not read my document

E-ticket entry uses the document you booked with, so carry that exact document. If the automatic gate cannot read it, use the staffed lane instead β€” passengers travelling on a passport normally need the staffed lane in any case.

A passenger will not save

Each account can hold a limited number of saved passengers, and newly added travellers may need verification. Names must match the document exactly; if a name contains rare characters it is easier to add it at a ticket counter.

App questions

Does the official app cost anything?
No. Railway 12306 is free to download and use, and you pay only the face value of the ticket. There is no legitimate "booking acceleration" fee of any kind.
Can foreign visitors book through the app?
Yes. Register with your passport, complete identity verification, and you can book online. At the station you will usually be directed to the staffed entry lane.
Do I still need to collect a paper ticket?
In almost all cases, no. E-tickets are now standard nationwide and you board using the document you booked with. If you need a printed receipt, it can be produced at a station for up to 180 days after travel.
How many times can I rebook?
Normally you may change a ticket once before departure. A ticket that has already been changed generally cannot be changed again β€” the app states the rule when you book.
What does a refund cost?
The fee depends on how close to departure you cancel, rising as departure approaches. Refunds made more than 15 days ahead are usually free of charge. The official rules take precedence.
